Technical Writing

Technical writing is a versatile career that requires a writer to explain technical concepts about specialized subjects. With the growth of the technology sector, and advancements in science and medicine, there has been an increased demand for technical communicators to write documentation for these new applications and scientific developments.

What is Technical Communication?

According to the Society for Technical Communication, technical writing is:

  • Communicating about technical or specialized topics, such as computer applications, medical procedures, or environmental regulations.
  • Communicating by using technology, such as web pages, help files, or social media sites.
  • Providing instructions about how to do something, regardless of how technical the task is or even if technology is used to create or distribute that communication.

Technical writing is a very diverse field. A writer may create documentation for many fields including business, engineering, science, computer technology, and health care. Many people who become technical writers have the required background knowledge or specialization in a particular field, therefore, most technical writers do have an undergraduate degree in the field that they write for. However, it is not a requirement to have a degree because if you have the background or skills in a particular area of expertise and have an aptitude for writing and are a quick learner, then this career may interest you.

There are numerous certificate programs and online courses to help you become a technical writer. The British Columbia Institute of Technology has a Technical Writing Associate Certificate program that may be completed completely online with a flexible learning format, so check out this program if you are interested in pursuing technical writing.
