Rainbow Mountain Peru

Rainbow Mountain is found in the Andes Mountains and is a few hours away from Cusco city. The mountain is 17,100 feet above sea level. It has a very unique rainbow like appearance. This colorful characteristic of the mountain is due to many distinct minerals that make up the mountain's landscape. Many people choose to visit this site from April to October because this is the dry season so you can expect clear skies on your hike, while November through March represents the wet season, but any traveler should be prepared for the occasional snowfall. It takes around 4 hours for the avid hiker to climb the mountain. It may take at least 2 days to acclimitize before attempting this hike, so many people take this opportunity to explore Cusco city while they are adjusting to this elevation.

Cusco City

Cusco cityCusco has a vibrant and bustling city life and provides a great opportunity to experience the local customs and appreciate its rich cultural heritage. It is the nearest major city to Mount Vinicunca with a population of around half a million people, and is 11,200 feet above see level. Alejandro Velesco Ateste Airport is the second busiest airport in Peru and is found in Cusco city. Many travelers choose to fly into this airport because Rainbow Mountain is in this region. In addition, the historic Machu Picchu, the location of the "Lost City of the Incas" is found near Cusco, which was the historic capital of the Inca Empire.

There are many tour companies that will provide expeditions to Rainbow Mountain from Cusco city. Rainbow Mountain is around a 3 hour drive from the city.
